Huge, High Speed Frisbee’s are Dangerous, and the Trucking Industry Knows It
I have represented a number of folks who’ve been seriously injured by flying chunks of frozen snow and ice coming off the tops of semi trucks on our highways.
The most dangerous are the big, flat pieces which, as the sun warms the rig or trailer, separate from the surface, catch a burst of air, and begin to hover for a second and then come flying toward oncoming traffic.
They can sail like a huge Frisbee across interstate medians, and at 70mph will do serious harm to anything or anyone they hit.
We cannot stop the snow and ice from accumulating on top of rigs, but this danger is well-known, thus foreseeable, and thus preventable.
Making a Difference
We cannot make highway travel completely safe, but if we don’t try at all levels all the time, then it will surely be less safe than it should be.
I applaud those trucking companies that are making the effort, and I disapprove of those that do nothing.
Please be safe out there.
